Safety Management on Roofing and Waterproofing Sites
Health and safety governs how Sicon Group works on industrial, commercial and retail roofing sites. It covers our own crews, any subcontractors working under us, the client's staff who remain on site during the work, and anyone at ground level below it.
Our safety management system is built on the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the Construction Regulations, and runs alongside ISO 45001. For work at height that means a fall protection plan, a site-specific risk assessment, and a safety file kept current for the duration of the contract.
Roofing carries real risk: fragile sheeting, unprotected edges, and weather that turns within an hour. Safety work is not about claiming those hazards away. It is about identifying them before the crew goes up, training for the ones that remain, and recording and investigating incidents rather than absorbing them.
SAIOSH is the professional body for occupational safety and health practitioners in South Africa. Membership is held and graded at individual level, on qualification and experience.

Compliance with International Standards
We work to ISO 9001 (Quality Management), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management). Our policies follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, the Construction Regulations and COIDA, alongside current South African labour legislation.
On-Site Safety Management
Trained Crews and Fall Arrest Equipment
Every crew that goes to site includes a qualified first aider and a trained basic firefighter. Site workers and supervisors hold current certification for the work they are doing, and those records are kept up to date rather than renewed once someone asks for them.
Our teams include fall arrest technicians at levels 1 and 2. Work at height is carried out on full-body harnesses, lifelines, shock absorbers and rated anchor points, chosen for the structure being worked on rather than for whatever happens to be on the vehicle.
Working at Height and Medical Certificates
Working at height and medical fitness certificates both carry expiry dates, and on a site inspection a lapsed certificate counts the same as no certificate. Ours are tracked centrally, including for our rope access technicians, so nobody arrives at a job holding a document that ran out last month.
Specialised Safety Roles on Site
A safety plan only helps if the person trained to use it is already on the roof. Our crews carry their own first aid and fire response capability rather than relying on the client's, and these roles are assigned according to the work:
Fall Protection Systems We Install
Some fall protection is worn and some of it is built into the building. We install the fixed side, which stays on the roof after we leave:

Regular Safety Audits & Inspections
Safety files are reviewed and updated as certificates expire, procedures change, or a new site presents hazards the last one did not. Inspections happen during the contract rather than only at handover, and findings are recorded rather than quietly corrected.
Our Commitment to Zero Harm
Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of the day. In practice that means the person closest to a hazard is expected to raise it, and raising it is never treated as an interruption. A late job can be recovered. A fall cannot.
