How long does polycarbonate last before it yellows?
Cheap polycarbonate yellows and turns brittle within a few years. Sheets made for roofing carry a co-extruded UV-protective layer on the weather face, and that layer is what determines service life. Properly specified sheets hold their clarity for well over a decade in South African sun. The layer only works one way round, so a sheet fitted upside down fails early, which is one reason the installation matters as much as the product.
Does polycarbonate sheeting make the building hotter?
Clear polycarbonate admits solar heat along with the light, so a large area of clear rooflight will raise temperatures underneath it. That is managed at specification rather than afterwards. Tinted, opal and heat-reflective grades cut solar gain, multiwall panels reduce heat transfer, and the rooflight area is sized to the daylight actually needed rather than the maximum possible. Can you walk on polycarbonate rooflights?
